Diarrhea & Dysentery management

29 April, 2010 (20:21) | Diseases | By: Health news

The condition in which water content and the frequency of passing of stool increases is known as diarrhea and dysentery. Usually in dysentery the stool is associated with mucous and blood. It may be acute or chronic and may present with few clinical features of moderate to severe dehydration and may even lead to death.

Many causes like infections, worm infestation, psychosomatic illnesses etc have been mentioned. Root cause of it however is indigestion and therefore dietary measures should aim to increase the strength of digestive fire and improve digestion.

In case of features like nausea, vomiting, heaviness in abdomen, flatulence, foul smelling sticky stools along with diarrhea, then medicine or diet should not aim to stop the passage of stools completely but ignoring the frequency of stools, measures to increase digestive fire strength should be aimed. Only if in case of acute symptoms of diarrhea and dysentery with absolutely watery stools and signs of dehydration, emergency measures to stop the process completely, have to be administered.

Diet:

To be taken:

  • Solid food:
  • a) Grains and cereals: Rice, green gram, lentil, barley, pigeon pea and sesame are useful. Popped rice or popped jowar (like popped corn) is useful in such condition.

    b) Vegetables: Ginger, plantain flower etc is to be used.

    c) Fruits: Ripe banana, black plum, pomegranate, fruits of palm tree etc indicated.

    d) Spices: dry ginger, coriander seeds, green coriander, cumin seeds, nutmeg, turmeric etc should be used to increase the strength of digestive fire.

    e) Non-vegetarian diet: flesh of deer, antilope, rabbit, partridge, small fish (from fresh waters) etc are useful.

    f) Dairy products: Cow’s milk, cream of milk, curd, buttermilk, white butter and clarified butter (ghee) are useful.

  • Liquid:
  • a) Hot water for drinking purpose all the time.

    b) Water boiled with dried ginger should be given in conditions such as low digestive fire strength, foul smelling sticky stool etc.

    c) Buttermilk adding dried ginger, ajowan, black pepper etc can be useful for drinking as it aggravates the digestion process.

    d) Hot infusion process of popped rice and popped jowar (made like popped corn process) is beneficial in this condition. This hot infusion should be consumed for strengthening the digestive fire as well as for quick re-hydration.

    e) Soup of lentil, pigeon pea is useful in diarrhea and dysentery.

    f) Coconut water is good for re-hydration.

    g) Milk along with honey and sugar is useful in bleeding dysentery.

    h) The water in which rice grain is washed and rinsed for 15-20 min. is used for drinking after filtering in case of bleeding dysentery.

    Note:

    1. In early stage of diarrhea fasting should be done. Later very light diet like soup etc should be given. Only when digestive fire improves then some solid food like rice should be asked to consume. 2. Non-vegetarian food should be prepared with additional clarified butter (ghee) and pomegranate juice if it is to be consumed in such condition. 3. Cream of curd should be fried in the clarified butter (ghee) and oil and then sugar, dry ginger should be added to it. This combination works well in cases of dysentery. 4. For diarrhea associated with blood in the stools, the combination of black sesame and sugar, white butter and honey and sugar should be used. At the same time milk and rice should be used in dine. 5. Rice should be dry fried before cooking. 6. Preparation of menthol leaves with sesame and garlic is useful in such conditions.

    Not to be taken:

  • Solid food:
  • a) Grains and cereals: wheat, black gram, spiked dolichos should be avoided.

    b) Vegetables: Pumpkin, potato, sweet potato, green leafy vegetables, green pea, drumsticks, cucumber etc are contraindicated.

    c) Fruits: Mango, beetle nut, pumpion gourd, grapes, hog plum, coconut, watermelon, melon, jujube, grapefruit etc should be avoided.

    d) Bakery products: Pastries, white bread, biscuits are to be avoided as they may cause flatulence and increase indigestion.

  • Liquids:
  • a) Very large quantity of impure water and very cold water and water in frequent intervals can cause some problem in such condition.

    b) In such condition, use of sugarcane juice should be avoided.

    c) Use of any type of liquor should be avoided.

    Notes:

    1. Food products heavy to digest like pizza, burger etc should be avoided. 2. Food, water of unhygienic places should strictly be avoided. 3. Food should not be too salty and spicy. 4. Use of milkshakes and fruit salads should be avoided. 5. Use of tomato sauce, ajinomoto, jam, pickles etc should be strictly avoided. 6. Irregular food habits, late night food intake and left over food consumption are strictly prohibited in such conditions.

    Non-dietary measures:

  • General body massage and fomentation should be avoided.
  • Bath especially with cold water is not appropriate in this condition.
  • Suppression of natural urges should be avoided.
  • Taking not enough sleep can have some adverse effects in such condition.
  • Increased and uncontrolled sex aggravates such condition.
  • Uncontrolled anger can cause adverse effects in such cases.
  • In case of bleeding with the stools, anus is washed with milk or decoction of astringent medicinal herbs.
  • A piece of cotton dipped in sandalwood oil or medicated clarified butter (ghee) can be kept in anus to stop bleeding.
  • An enema using medicated buttermilk can be given in such cases.
  • In some cases, the prolapsed rectum or anus is associated with diarrhea and dysentery. Here oil should be applied on it with light fomentation and then that prolapsed part is pushed back in its original place. The cotton piece dipped in clarified butter (ghee) should be kept there for some days to get the muscle tone of surrounding muscles back

    Mental Health of Children

    28 April, 2010 (21:39) | Mental Health | By: Health news

In this complex and changing society it is recommended that parents become aware of the need to safeguard the mental health of children. Mental health, of course, is not just the home environment, but when the family atmosphere is healthy and the relations established within it love, children are likely to develop properly.

The concept of psychological disorder does not admit a single definition. To this must be added that in the continuum normal-pathology is not always easy to pinpoint where health breaks. Often the presence of a cluster of symptoms that create discomfort or interfere with children’s activity can speak of mental disorder. The anomaly occurs in cognitive, emotional, behavioral, social and relational or alters a child’s life considerably.

Mental disorder itself involves a loss of mental balance which limits the possibilities for personal fulfillment. Not to be confused with juvenile psychopathology, very common during the growing stage, as the Onychophagia (nail biting), opposition, lies tiny, poor hygiene, night terrors, etc.., Which may express mild immaturity, anxiety before certain situations or improper acquisition of a habit.

The higher infant-adolescent psychopathology may vary by age and gender, but generally affects aspects such as learning, development, behavior, nutrition, sleep, communication, etc.. The range is so wide that when parents have doubts, what is most appropriate to consult a specialist. Beyond the psychological or medical treatment is essential to involve the family.

    Causes of disorders

The study of the causes of mental disorders usually reveals a combination of physical, psychological and social. Sometimes the causes predominantly biological (genetic abnormalities, brain dysfunction, etc.). Sometimes, however, the key is to be found in traumatic childhood experiences relating to assault, neglect, rejection, etc.., Whose negative impact depends partly on the strength of the personality of the child. The mental weakness in the early developmental stages can prevent assimilation of the conflict, which in turn increases the vulnerability and hampers development.

A third group of leading causes of psychopathology can be traced to social experiences. This applies, for example, family situations chaired by excessive rigidity, poor communication, lack of affection, overprotection, and so on. Nor can it ignore the sociocultural environment in the assessment of risks posed to children and adolescents. An environment characterized by corruption, repression, manipulation of mass media, economic poverty, pollution and alienation from nature, the abuse of technology, etc.., Is fertile ground for mental illness.

Clearly, the intervention of social factors is not readily separable from the psychological causes and biological aspects. The weighting of the different dimensions, to the extent possible, would probably require a detailed study of each case.

    Family Changes

The family in Western countries are experiencing major changes known to all. Which is to say that the family is not exclusively a traditional system consisting of the father, mother and children born within marriage. The consequences of the conditions under which the family is vary, but it certainly increases as the break in the household, its members will be exposed to a greater number of psychological problems.

The model of family relations chaired by poor communication, the structural weakness or stiffness is one of the real causes of psychopathology in children and adolescents. Parents are now absorbed by the hustle and work the remaining time to devote to their children. Creature comforts at home are not always accompanied by interpersonal quality. A familiar landscape filled with electronic equipment leaves no room for the emotional meeting. In this context of increasing depersonalization find at least the following sources familiar mental disturbance:

The parental permissiveness established as a reaction to the authoritarianism of the past has proved to be equally harmful to the social and emotional development of children. The structure corresponds to permissive family communities in which parents do not take their responsibilities or establish any kind of rules, which leads children to a dangerous confusion. Consider, for example, alcoholism and other drug dependencies.

We must also take into account the isolation and individualism emphasized by some technologies (television, internet …) that are often used inappropriately or abused. In these circumstances, it is no wonder that in the younger segments of the population have increased electronic addictions.

Family disintegration caused by separation or divorce. The consequences of cases vary considerably, but the conflicts and tensions at home can have negative effects on children and may push them toward violence, marginalization, and so on.

The stress family situations of distress generated by economic requirements, etc.., harms mental health. In fact, children who come from disadvantaged social groups are more likely to experience psychosomatic illnesses: asthma, headaches, intestinal disorders, etc..

Life events (death of a loved one, sexual abuse, leaving home for a parent, serious illness, addiction of a family member, etc..) also have negative impact on the mental health of children and adolescents.

Mental disorder itself involves a loss of mental balance which limits the possibilities for personal fulfillment. Not to be confused with juvenile psychopathology, very common during the growing stage, which may express mild immaturity, anxiety before certain situations or improper acquisition of a habit.

The higher infant-adolescent psychopathology may vary by age and gender, but generally affects aspects such as learning, development, behavior, nutrition, sleep, communication, etc. The range is so wide that when parents have doubts, what is most appropriate is to consult a specialist. Beyond the psychological or medical treatment, it is essential to involve the family.

Family life requires permanent care, touch, affection, understanding, values, attention to the seemingly trivial, sufficient stimulation and sensitivity to the uniqueness of each child. A family atmosphere of these features lights and gives the child the healthiest personal resources for the adventure of life.

    Cures For Peritoneal Mesotheliom

    28 April, 2010 (18:39) | Mesothelioma | By: Health news

Mesothelioma cancer which affects the lining of abdominal cavity is called peritoneal mesothelioma. About one-fifth of all the cases of mesothelioma cancer reported are found to be peritoneal mesothelioma. More than women, men become victims of this malady and it is caused due to over exposure to asbestos. The symptoms of the disease start appearing only twenty or thirty years after being exposed to asbestos. Timely diagnosis and treatment is the only way to prolong the lives of the victims. A tissue biopsy is an effective way of diagnosis, whereas other methods like CT scan may give baffling outcomes.

The symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma are formation of lumps in abdomen, pain in abdomen, fatigue, fever, collection of fluid in the abdomen, weight loss, lack of proper functioning of digestive system, anemia etc. Before the symptoms of the cancer appear, some patients may experience uneasy feelings. It may also happen that peritoneal mesothelioma is diagnosed while the affected person goes for a check up related to some other health issues like pelvic mass, gall bladder, hernia etc.

Various stages of this cancer can be found out in the tumor, lymph nodes and metastases system (TNM). General cancers are determined using this system. Localized abrasions, which are shown in the first level, are totally removable. In the second stage, the disease affects the abdominal cavity on peritoneal and organ surfaces. The disease is curable in this stage with the help of strong treatments. The third stage is when the infection spreads to liver and colon thereby affecting their functions. Still the infection remains inside the abdominal cavity. When the infection spreads from the abdominal cavity to adjoining organs the infection reaches the fourth stage.

Peritoneal mesothelioma patients are administered with strong medication and other treatment methods. Debulking surgery combined with intra peritoneal hyperthermic chemotherapy, intraperitoneal chemotherapy and radiation is the common multimodality treatment opted by doctors. Intake of vital minerals and nutrients is compulsory to make the body cope with the side effects of chemotherapy and other medications.

The physical health and age of the patient are important factors which determine the success of treatment. Proper treatment and timely diagnosis are vital factors which provide relief to the patients.

    Prevent Diabetes Mellitus

    27 April, 2010 (18:02) | Diabetes | By: Health news

It is important to be knowledgeable about the disease process in order to understand how to prevent diabetes. Diabetes is a disorder that affects the way food is digested and used for energy. Food is broken down into a form of sugar, called glucose. Glucose is then used by cells for growth and energy. However, insulin must be present in order for the glucose to reach the cells.

Individuals with diabetes are unable to utilize the glucose because of decreased or absent insulin production by the pancreas, and insulin resistance. Insulin resistance means that the cells do not properly use insulin. Due to the glucose not being utilized by the cells, it builds up in the blood stream.

Diabetes is diagnosed in one of three ways: * Type 1, or juvenile diabetes * Type 2, or adult onset diabetes * Gestational diabetes.

Type 1 most often affects people below the age of 40, but can occur at anytime. It is considered an auto-immune disease. This means the immune system is attacking the cells in the pancreas that are responsible for insulin production. The cause is not fully understood and, therefore, it is not preventable.

Gestational diabetes, also called carbohydrate intolerance, is diagnosed at some point during pregnancy. It usually resolves after birth, but the mother is at an increased risk of developing Type 2 diabetes later in her life.

Type 2 is the most common, and usually affects people over the age of 45. It is characterized by insulin deficiency and insulin resistance. It is the only form that can be preventable.

Prevention starts with awareness of the risk factors which include: a family history of diabetes, sedentary lifestyle, poor diet, excess body weight, and if you are over 45 years of age.

Some ways you can reduce your risk of developing this condition are eating healthy, exercise, and weight loss if you are overweight.

Healthy eating consists of eating low fat and low calorie foods. Avoid having a lot of animal products in your diet, and eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

Incorporate at least thirty minutes of moderate physical activity into your daily routine. If you are overweight, work on shedding those excess pounds. Healthy lifestyle choices and awareness are essential to prevention of diabetes.

    Weight Loss Tips

    27 April, 2010 (14:55) | Weight Loss | By: Health news

In today’s world, almost everywhere you look people are looking for weight loss tips. Weight loss has become the primary objective of those who are going to the gym. They want to lose weight and they want it NOW. Luckily, there are some weight loss tips that will make this process a great deal easier, ensuring that you can succeed without feeling like you’re putting your body through torture.

  • Calorie Intake
  • The first couple quick weight loss tips are number one, be sure that your calorie intake is not too extreme. Think about it. Put yourself on a starvation diet and you are just asking for a rebound binge. Sure, you may have great will power and will be able to withhold for a few days, but you will soon cave and when you do, chances are you’ll eat a vast quantity of food in response to starving for so long.

If your caloric intake is too low to begin then where will you go when you hit a plateau? For example, a male will be far more successful starting with 2800 calories and dropping 200 calories every 2 weeks as he evaluates his progress instead of starting at 2000 calories and only having one direction to go – starvation which will eventually turn off his metabolism and stall his weight loss progress.

  • Gradual Progression
  • Secondly, keep in mind current “nutrition level.” Do you really need a bodybuilder pre-contest diet or do you just need to start with the basics? If you begin with a meal plan that is too extreme then you will not be able to follow it and regardless of how well the diet is designed, if you aren’t able to stick with it, it isn’t going to work very well. My favorite line of mine is, “The best diet that works is the one that you follow.” Adopting a more gradual nutrition approach, just like your training, would help with your adherence levels, which would then translate to you being better able to maintain it. One of the best weight loss tips I gave a client who was eating 2 double cheese burgers a day was to start eating one double cheese burger! Why didn’t I recommend he eat a steamed chicken breast instead since that is the superior choice? The steamed chicken breast, obviously the mores superior choice would be too much of a change and not create adherence and eventually failure.

  • Celebrate With a 10% Meal
  • Another few fast weight loss tips are that you should always be incorporate a “victory meal” to reflect your accomplishment and progress. If you have gone a few weeks without any cheat meals and are dropping consistently then kick back and have a beer or do something that is “rewarding” – just don’t get too carried away and don’t get back on track. You won’t sabotage weeks of dieting with one “victory meal” as long as you don’t adopt a mindset that this celebration represents an “ending.” The key is to not get carried away and to use this as a reward, refocus and get ready for another 4-8 weeks of hard training and dieting. Consider a “celebration meal” every few weeks and then get back on track!

  • Smart Exercise Program
  • Next up, when selecting the exercise program you’ll go on, again, be sure not to choose something that’s overly extreme. Too much cardio can actually hinder your results, so you’ll want to avoid that as much as possible. Three to four sessions a week along with a properly planned out diet should be plenty to get you seeing results. If you are having to do hours a day in order to just lose a pound, something else is off with either your diet (most likely) or your weight training program.

  • Clear The Clutter
  • Finally, the last quick weight loss tip to keep in mind is that before starting any diet program, you should rid the house of any foods that could be problematic. If the food is not readily available, it makes it sort of hard to eat it. Consider you home a “haven” and that it’s one thing to have slip ups occur outside of your home but not inside of your home where you can control what is coming in and out. Sabotaging your own weight loss success, in your own home, is embarrassing.

By clearing yourself of the problem foods before you start, you overcome a huge obstacle already.

Replace these ‘bad’ foods with ones that are much healthier and will still taste good, so when you do get hungry, they are what you reach for rather than the old foods which caused your weight gain in the first place.

    Massive Penis Enlargement Method

    27 April, 2010 (12:50) | Men's Health | By: admin

Although many people believe that their penis is at a decent size at 5 inches, it is now more common for men to want a bigger penis. Of course when you are bigger and longer in size, you will be much more satisfied. If you can muster the usefulness of the internet, you will come to find that it contains a vast amount of sites with advice on how to increase penis size that is extremely helpful. Many methods that you may have heard of actually do NOT work and can sometimes be harmful, such as certain pills and penis pumps. It is in your best interest to avoid these methods at all costs, simply try to find some natural methods instead.
    Indian herbal viagra
The best methods you can find relate to easy exercises that are actually the safest and most useful ways to successfully increase the size of your penis. The statistics of how many men have had beneficial results after using these methods are great and have proved to satisfy all men who have tried them, as well as their female partner.

The most amazing aspect of these exercises is that it only takes 10-15 minutes a day to do, and that little amount of time is actually sufficient enough to produce positive results. If you are debating whether you should give these exercises a try, you should know that there will be no negative results regardless, all that can come of trying it is a bigger penis.

In fact, this particular exercise consists of only one quick step in order to work. The keyword of the very first step is TRACTION, as in putting pressure on the specific part of your penis and the cell tissues within in order to manipulate it. You can do this easily by the following steps:

    1. Make an “OK” shape with your right hand. Grip the base of your half-flaccid penis firmly.

    2. Drive upwards to the penile shaft.

    3. Do the same thing with your left hand, in a cycle.

After doing this for a few minutes, that constant pressure will cause a reaction in which your penis will attempt to adapt to that constant pressure and ultimately increase in size. This actually also works on other parts of the body as well, such as the neck. This has been proven to work by several women in Central Asia, and if it works for the neck, why won’t it work for your penis as well? The truth is, that it will most definitely work, so forget about taking pills or using pumps, because there are many exercises that are safe and more rewarding than the pills or pumps could ever be.

    Alternative information:

First off, do NOT use weights or anything else that you hang on your penis in order to supposedly make your penis stronger and larger, it does not work and WILL cause damage to your ligaments. Safety should be your main concern whenever trying to do anything, such as enhancing your penis size. When you walk around with weight on the end of your penis you will get stretch marks, as well as possible deformity that is never appealing to a woman.

Along with this, you should not take pills to induce enlargement of your penis, most of them do not produce the results that you expect and could actually cause unwanted side effects. Many companies around the world sell these pills and promote them in a way in which makes men want to buy them, the fact that doctors actually prescribe these pills does not help either. It is a waste of your time and money to use these pills, so don’t even consider this option.

Many people try to use penis pumps to enlarge their penis, which is definitely not suggested. They are designed for those unfortunate men who cannot get an erection, so if you use this when you do not have this problem, you may burst some blood vessels or worse. Do NOT try any of these methods if you want to increase the size of your penis.

Rather than using those harmful methods to enlarge your penis, simply try some methods that have been successfully practiced in the past by others who wanted to increase their size just as you do. There are many un-harmful methods that will produce positive results, they all fall under the category of “hand exercising”. Basically what you do is use traction to increase your size, when you do this daily you will be bigger in no time. All you must do is firmly grasp your penis, then stroke it back and forth which puts enough pressure on your penile tissue to increase your overall size in a matter of weeks.

3 Things You Should Do To Cure Mesothelioma

    27 April, 2010 (11:55) | Mesothelioma | By: Health news

Even if you are undergoing chemotherapy, radiation treatment or alternative treatments for asbestos mesothelioma, you need to make sure your body is in prime fighting condition. The more time and energy, your body requires to deal with other health issues, is more time and energy that it can’t use to eliminate the cancer in your body.

First, you need to ensure that you are eating the best foods to fuel your body. You don’t want to make things worse for your body by introducing toxic foods or foods that create an extra burden for your body. The simplest way to do this is to increase the amount of raw fruits and vegetables in your diet. Also eat more natural unprocessed grains such as multi grain breads or crackers. Eliminate as much processed foods as you can. If it comes in a box, a can or a bag, it’s more than likely a processed food. A National Cancer Institute study showed a strong link between cancer and meat consumption, so try to cut out as much meat as possible, especially red meat. Consider switching to a vegetarian diet. And if you really want to do as much as you can, switch to a raw food organic diet.

Secondly, increase your oxygen levels. Dr. Otto Warburg, a German cancer specialist, won the 1931 Nobel prize for his work on oxygen and cancer cells. He showed that cancer cells can not survive in a highly oxygenated environment. He found that certain foods have enzymes that can dramatically increase your oxygen absorption in your cells. Also, practice deep breathing exercises every day to provide the source of that oxygen that your body needs.

Thirdly, reduce your sugar consumption. Eating processed sugars such as pop, candy and deserts creates an insulin “shock” to your body because unlike natural fruits, which require time to digest, processed “sugar foods” virtually inject sugar into your bloodstream immediately. Your body reacts by secreting huge amounts of insulin, which not only converts that sugar to fat, but more importantly, it acts to shut down your immune system. Eating one cup of sugar a day, which could be found in a two litre bottle of pop would suppress your immune system for approximately 12 hours! That’s half a day that your immune system can’t seek and destroy cancer cells. That’s also half a day that the asbestos mesothelioma cancer cells can grow out of control.

    Milk Allergies

    26 April, 2010 (17:12) | Allergies | By: Health news

Millions of people in the country are lactose intolerant or have digestive problems when they drink milk. If you child is one of these people, by simply heating the milk before she drinks it, she may be able to drink it without having the normal lactose intolerance problems.

This data is originating from a recent report in the Allergy and Clinical Immunology publication. As reported in the research article, when normal milk was heated and provided to kids who had cow milk allergies, three of four of them no longer exhibited allergy symptoms. Under normal situations, when a milk allergy sensitive child drinks milk, his antibodies go into action to attack the milk proteins. This is what causes the allergy symptoms. The theory is that when milk is treated past a specified temperature, the heat destroys the milk proteins that normally trigger the allergy symptoms.

Next the researchers had to test this theory. And they did so by slowly introducing the way the gave the heated milk to the kids. They started by giving the heated milk to the children indirectly through other food products. For example, they would heat milk, and then add the heated milk to various recipes such as muffins, pancakes, and others. If the children had no reaction from eating foods containing heated milk, they then had them drink the heated milk directly. As theorized, most of the participants had no reaction to the heated milk.

Up to now, if a lactose intolerant person wanted to drink milk, they did have choices. These choices usually came down to one of the following four options:

  • They could do what many people do and simply avoid milk products altogether.
  • They could drink milk and simply suffer the consequences of bloating, cramps, upset stomach, diarrhea, and so on.
  • They could orally take food enzymes that enable them to pre-digest the milk proteins.
  • They could purchase the more expensive milk that have milk enzymes added to them.
  • We should, of course, mention that there are many people in the health field who think that humans have no business drinking milk from a cow. And, what they suggest is that if you really desire the taste of a milk like product that you try one of the many milk substitutes in the stores such as soy milk, almond milk, rice milk and so on. But for those that want cow’s milk, the study could provide them with new food options.

Up to this point, its long been thought that if a person was allergic to milk, it didn’t matter whether the milk was cold, warm, hot, or whatever. At the very least the study forces researchers to rethink some of their earliest assumptions about milk allergies and how to handle them.

And, even though this particular milk study was relatively tiny, consisting of just a hundred children, if larger follow up studies are done and reflect the same results, an entire new class of products could hit the market targeted at the millions of people who love to drink milk but are lactose intolerant.

But that could be only the tip of the iceberg. This study could also lead to entirely new ways of managing and controlling lactose intolerance in both adults and children.

    Hair Transplant Surgery

Because of hair’s innate tendencies due to ethnic differences you need to be aware of how it will affect your hair transplant surgery and your final results!

Hair transplant surgery is such a delicate surgery with so many variations that consideration of ethnicity can make all the difference in the success of a surgery. Aside from the many technical aspects that differ, Dr. Robert M. Bernstein M.D., F.A.A.D., Clinical Professor of Dermatology at Columbia University in New York and hair transplant surgeon and director of Bernstein Medical Hair Restoration in New York City, explains that racial differences have an effect on all phases of the procedure including the original diagnosis, any complications, the finished design and future aesthetic considerations that may arise due to racial differences in hair follicle and growth pattern, hair density and hair diameter.

Dr. Bernstein explains that the hair density – the number of hairs per square inch – differs among ethnicities. Caucasians have the highest, followed by Asians and Africans have the lowest density. Both Africans and Caucasians have thinner hair diameters while Asians have a coarse, thicker hair diameter which takes up more space. The average amount of hairs contained in each follicular unit also varies, as hairs typically grow in groupings of 1 to 4 hairs per follicle. Asians have groupings of 1 to 2 hairs per follicle, while Africans have 3 and Caucasians have anywhere from 2 to 4 hairs per follicle. In addition, the straightness or kinkiness of the hair makes a big difference in the final results. African hair is the kinkiest and finest while Asian is the straightest and coarsest with Caucasians falling somewhere in-between depending on the client. Asians look like they have more hair because of its thickness and African kinkiness also makes it look like thick hair although it is actually very fine. Below, Bernstein explains how these variations affect the stages and decisions involved in a hair transplant surgery.

DIAGNOSIS: The main differences in diagnoses of hair loss disorder occur between male and female causes for hair loss. But aside from those differences, some diagnosis are a little more racially determined like Traction Alopecia seen mainly in African American Women who wear tight braided hairstyles that cause hair loss in-between braided sections or around the hairline which can recede. Another form of ‘traumatic’ hair loss in predominantly black women stems from constant heat styling close to the scalp and irritating chemical processes is called Central Centrifugal Cicatricial Alopecia (CCCA). Both of these diseases are typically reversible if the woman stops her damaging hair practices and so surgery wouldn’t be necessary, but if the hair loss was permanent in those areas (as determined by a scalp biopsy), they would be a very good candidate for hair transplant surgery due to the health of donor hair areas not affected by the trauma. Bernstein stresses that the diagnoses is the all-important first step in determining your surgery strategy because that is the dependant factor on whether you have enough healthy donor hair to achieve the desired result.

THE PROCEDURE: In terms of the technical aspects of the hair transplant procedure, Bernstein explains that there are two ways to harvest the grafts. One way is to take a long thin strip and dissect follicular units and another way is to extract each follicular unit separately under a microscope, called Follicular Unit Extraction. In Caucasians, both procedures are straightforward. But in Africans there is a huge difference because the follicular units are curved under the skin, unlike in Caucasians or Asians. Harvesting the follicular units is easiest in Asians because the hair is coarse and stiff. Strip harvesting usually gets a better yield, no matter what the ethnicity. But the procedure, no matter what the race, must always be done with a skilled surgical team.

THE DESIGN: There are many differences, both cultural and physical that affect the final design of the hair transplant. Asians, in contrast to Caucasians, and Indians particularly, like to have broad flat hair lines because they are especially concerned with frontal hair for their wedding ceremonies and this broader hairline requires more hair. “Often we weight it more in front and less in back, which is especially important depending on the amount of healthy donor hair they have,” says Bernstein. In Caucasians, on the other hand, a little hair recession at the temples is perfectly acceptable so you can transplant and cover over a little, depending, again, on the amount of healthy donor hair available on the back and sides. Africans, however, can’t use the comb-over method because hair does not lie flat and is kinky and fine and so the design is much less forgiving.

Africans are less likely to be good candidates for hair transplant surgery compared to Asians and Caucasians unless they have good donor density to cover all bald or thinning spots, – explains Bernstein.

COMPLICATIONS: There are some other racial differences that can cause complications in the final outcome of the procedure that clients need to be aware of, advises Bernstein, and a personal history of skin and scarring tendencies should always be discussed. In Africans, there is a greater incidence of keloids or raised, thickened scars. They also don’t have as much scalp flexibility to excise a strip of donor hair and they run the risk of greater scarring compared to Caucasians. Asians don’t have the propensity for thickened scars but can have a stretch scar or a visible incision scar because their hair grows more perpendicular to the scalp so when cut short you actually see the scalp more – it becomes transparent and does not hide the scar. Luckily, explains Bernstein, the recipient areas usually show no scarring at all, no matter what the ethnicity.

FINAL AESTHETICS: “One final style issue all hair transplant recipients need to be aware of is that you will generally not be able to wear your new hair cut close to the scalp to avoid visible scars – and that goes for any race,” cautions Dr. Bernstein. “In addition, we try never to make a judgment on a person’s future hair loss when the patient is too young – we try to wait until they are at least age 30 or so to determine a pattern of balding. We want to be sure there is a very good chance of having limited future hair loss and that donor areas are stable and healthy, usually at the sides and back of the head.”

The bottom line is that patients need to be aware of ethnic and racial differences and be sure to choose a skilled hair transplant surgical team that has experience with exactly your type of hair. Ask questions, ask for referrals and ask for before and after photos just to be sure.
